Why measurements matter
Why should you add your weight to Garmin Connect?
Weight in Garmin Connect is not only a trend line. On compatible devices, it helps personalise Fitness Age, BMI, calorie calculations and selected hydration estimates.
Profile data, not just a chart
Garmin Connect keeps weight in your profile and health history. A recent value provides a useful trend, but it is also an input to several calculations documented by Garmin. The exact effect depends on your watch or cycling computer and the other data available.
Weight, body fat and Garmin Fitness Age
Garmin calls this feature Fitness Age. It is not a medical measure of biological age. On newer devices compatible with the improved method, Garmin combines VO₂ max, vigorous activity, resting heart rate and either body-fat percentage or BMI.
If body fat is unavailable, Garmin uses BMI calculated from height and weight. Garmin also states that Fitness Age may not refresh when weight or body-fat data is more than seven days old.
More personalised calorie estimates
Weight is part of the profile information Garmin uses to estimate calories. Resting calories are based on factors that include age, height, weight and sex. Activity calories can also use profile data, heart rate and, depending on the sport and device, other sensors.
An old weight does not make every estimate invalid, but the calculations continue to rely on a profile that may no longer reflect you accurately.
An input to selected hydration estimates
On compatible devices, Garmin states that estimated sweat loss during an activity accounts for weight, effort, distance, speed, elevation, temperature, heart rate and other variables. This feature is not available on every device.
What weight does not unlock by itself
Adding weight does not automatically create a VO₂ max estimate, Body Battery score or Training Readiness score. Those features have their own sensor, activity and eligibility requirements. Weight improves calculations that explicitly use it, but it does not replace wearing the device or recording the required activities.
How can you keep weight current in Garmin Connect?
- Manual entry: suitable for an occasional update, but it requires regular action.
- Garmin Index scale: Garmin’s officially documented route for automatically receiving weight and body-fat data.
- BodyRelay: transfers weight and compatible body-composition values from Withings, with a preview and duplicate protection.
BodyRelay reads Withings through its official API. Writing to Garmin relies on an unofficial interface that may change or become temporarily unavailable.
Key takeaway
Keeping a recent weight in Garmin Connect makes your profile more consistent and can refresh improved Fitness Age, BMI and selected calorie or hydration estimates. These remain fitness and wellness indicators, not medical measurements or diagnoses.
