Independent comparison
BodyRelay, MyFitnessPal, Garmin Index S2 or self-hosting?
There is no single best method for everyone. The right option depends on the metrics you need, your budget, your hardware and the technical maintenance you accept.
Quick comparison
| Option | Main benefit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| BodyRelay | Browser flow, preview, six compatible values | Unofficial Garmin write interface |
| MyFitnessPal | Documented weight bridge | Three-service chain, composition not documented |
| Garmin Index S2 | Native Garmin Connect integration | Requires another scale |
| withings-sync | Open source and hosting control | Installation, maintenance and command line |
BodyRelay: keep your Withings scale
BodyRelay is designed for people who want to keep their scale and centralise weigh-ins in Garmin without installing or maintaining a server. The first import is previewed, six body values can be sent and duplicate weigh-ins are filtered. Manual mode is free; automatic sync starts at €2 per year.
The trade-off matters: Garmin does not provide a public official API for this write flow. A change to its interface may interrupt transfers.
MyFitnessPal: a bridge documented mainly for weight
Withings and Garmin document MyFitnessPal as a possible intermediary. It can be enough for weight and does not require new hardware. It does, however, depend on the permissions and availability of three services. The official sources reviewed do not promise transfer of all six body-composition values.
Garmin Index S2: the native route
Replacing a Withings scale with a Garmin Index S2 provides the most direct route into Garmin Connect. It is relevant when replacing hardware or when native integration matters more than Withings-specific features. Cost and ecosystem change are the key trade-offs.
withings-sync: for technical users
The open-source jaroslawhartman/withings-sync project can sync Withings data to Garmin from a computer or server. It provides transparency and control, but you take responsibility for installation, updates, provider secrets, monitoring and compatibility breaks.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose BodyRelay to keep Withings without administering infrastructure.
- Try MyFitnessPal if weight is enough and you already use the service.
- Choose Garmin Index S2 for native hardware integration.
- Self-host if you are comfortable with Docker, scheduled jobs and secret management.
